Two figures stand over the cauldron, to which ascends David Salomons, refusing the Lord Mayor's entreaty to renounce the Jewish faith in order to become an Alderman. Salomons was a leading figure in the campaign for Jewish emancipation in Britain in the 19th century. He was eventually elected an Alderman in 1847 and went on to become the first Jewish
