Heaten latched metal box it dates from 1772There's a tear to the canvas at upper left, showing a bit of the stretcher underneath, but I find that antique seascapes of this ilk tend to feel all the more moody and atmospheric for the wear and tear on them. And I love the effect of varnish on these old paintings too, making the greens and blues feel otherworldly but also very true to the drama of the sea.
