I believe this box is Meiji period Japanese

I think it would also be pretty great to wear to the movies

It could certainly still be used to to catch ashes and/or save a butt or two from becoming litter

I can't say for certain that it is a Native American carving, but based on the face, I might think so. In any event, as opposed to many "wood spirit" carvings faces carved into branches with the bark on them which are pretty kitschy, the relative simplicity and stoicism makes this one really great I think, and with quite a proud presence that far
